Fort Clinch State Park Fishing Pier sustained major damage as Hurricane Matthews brushed our shores. Photos provided by Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

Fort Clinch State Park’s Fishing Pier is off limits after Hurricane Matthew caused considerable damage to the structure. According to Jason Mahon, public information specialist, “The Florida Park Service is currently working to reopen all parks impacted by Hurricane Matthew and to cleanup parks that have already reopened, including Fort Clinch State Park. Due to the damage sustained to the pier, it is currently closed to ensure visitor safety. DEP has hired an engineering firm to perform an analysis of the structural integrity of the pier.”

It is so sad to see damage to one of Amelia Island’s iconic landmarks. I hope repairs will begin soon and once again allow access to this 1/2 mile walk over the water. The only winners right now are the fish who need not worry about being caught and dangled in the air for that long ride to the pier deck.
