Officer Eric Oliver

“I am saddened to inform you that Deputy Eric Oliver died in the line of duty this morning on A1A just west of Chester Road by the Gate convenience store. Deputy Oliver was assisting Border Patrol as they were checking some individuals in a vehicle parked at the store. One of the individuals in the vehicle fled on foot going across A1A towards the south. Deputy Oliver pursued the person on foot and was crossing A1A when a westbound vehicle struck him in the left side. Deputy Oliver sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. While we all mourn his loss, please keep his Mother and Father (Doug & Sharon Oliver) and especially his six year old daughter, Shelby Lynn Oliver, in your thoughts and prayers. Once funeral arrangement have been made we will let you know.”

Editor’s Note: In a moving tribute to Oliver’s service, an  escort comprised of numerous area public safety professionals, brought Deputy Oliver’s remains to Oxley Heard Funeral Home in Fernandina Beach. Many community members stood silently on AIA/State Road 200, to pay their respects.
