Ruth Carden moved here with her husband 21 years ago from New Jersey where they were both professors at Princeton University. Ruth worked in the Art Department. The new Amelia Island yard was lacked any interesting feature. She worked tirelessly planning and producing the garden and landscape as it is today. Her strong artistic background and eye for beauty is demonstrated in every corner of the yard. She said, “My garden bears the influence of abstract expressionism – the same as my art.”

Through the years she planted many flowering plants which bloom at different times of the year so no matter what month it is, something is always blooming. While she enjoys putting plants in the ground, she also has potted plants scattered about the landscape.

A variety of Ruth Carden’s beautiful flowers.

The flowers blooming now are the lovely pink, red and white camellias, Datura (angel trumpet plants), shrimp plant, leopard plants, roses, firespike, amaryllis, daffodils, and a lovely poinsettia which continues to grow and bloom. Ruth is standing beside her tall, beautiful camellia with white blooms.

She is a prolific producer of sewn art work, which is as unique and beautiful as her garden.
