On the south end of the island, the new restaurant Cucina South opened Saturday at the old Horizons location in Palmetto Walk. When we stopped by last night (Wednesday), they were packed and had set out tables on the lawn under two huge oaks. We asked John May, the general manager, to put us on the waiting list and sat outside to enjoy the fine weather. However, it soon filled up outside in addition to the upstairs, downstairs and wine bar inside.

When Alessandra came outside to see if we wanted a drink, we decided to order a pizza and some wine and just enjoy the outside location, as did several others. The menu was delightful and we all enjoyed the toasted bread with tapenade and wine while we waited for dinner.

Neighbors near us enjoyed spaghetti and meatballs as well as braised short ribs and lightly dressed salads. The menu has a nice variety of Italian dishes such as Veal Uccelletto and Osso Bucco as well as Halibut Citrone, Seared Grouper and Pomegranate Glazed Salmon. Judging by the packed house, I would say that Cucina South will be a welcome addition to the area. Go to their website, Cucinasouth.com for more information and a complete menu.
