In a quick ceremony at the start of a city commission meeting, Mayor John Miller read a proclamation from the city citing the Amelia Island Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for its 25 years of community service to Nassau County.
Chapter Regent Lynn Leisy’s remarks concentrated on the chapter’s dedication to the community. Each year, the chapter provides scholarships to graduating high school seniors, sponsors an American History essay contest, awards citizens for exemplary work related to history or conservation, and participates in Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is the largest women’s service organization in the world and contributes over one million volunteer hours a year. Over 200 members of the Amelia Island Chapter contribute approximately 5,000 volunteer hours and $4,000 in scholarships and awards in Nassau County each year.
