Amelia Island Jazz Festival receives proclamation

Founders of the Amelia Island Jazz Festival, Les DeMerle and his wife, Bonnie Eisele,, receive proclamation from Mayor Robin Lentz.

The city of Fernandina Beach recognized the Amelia Island Jazz Festival’s importance to the community in a proclamation read by Mayor Robin Lentz on Wednesday at City Hall. On hand to accept the honor were Festival Artistic Director Les DeMerle and his wife, Bonnie Eisele, both of whom founded the AIJF 14 years ago. Mayor Lentz said, “Each year, Les DeMerle, Bonnie Eisele and countless volunteers, organize and promote the legendary and much celebrated Les DeMerle Amelia Island Jazz Festival. This world-class event highlights the contribution of jazz music within our community. It connects cultures, schools and raises awareness about the art of jazz and has become a renowned special eventin our community.”

DeMerle thanked the city for its support over the past 14 years, and praised local volunteers. “I can’t say enough good things about the incredible help we’ve had our board of directors and volunteers. It’s very inspiring for us to be a part of this community, to bring jazz education into the schools and to nurture along young musicians as well
