Like a Breakfast to Write Home About? Try the Southern Donut Company

By Dylan Bailey

If you’re a breakfast aficionado craving gourmet donuts, hearty meals, and artisan coffee, the Southern Donut Company should be your next destination. Since it opened in Yulee in 2022, the restaurant has been making waves with finger-licking donuts, an inviting atmosphere and excellent service.

Stepping into the Southern Donut Company is like walking into a friend’s cozy kitchen. The interiors are clean and welcoming, with an airy, open space bigger than it appears from the outside. The ordering area showcases an array of mouth-watering donuts, and a look to the left reveals a spacious dining hall with ample seating.

The wooden tables, soft music playing in the background, and the friendly staff create a warm atmosphere. It’s the perfect setting for a morning work session with your laptop or a leisurely breakfast with friends.

At the Southern Donut Company, the show’s star is, without a doubt, the donuts. These aren’t your ordinary, mass-produced, run-of-the-mill donuts. Each one is a handcrafted, yeast-raised, gourmet delicacy. So let’s talk about three of the donuts I ordered: cinnamon sugar, glazed, and strawberry glazed.

While all three of these donuts are fantastic and share in being soft and moist, the strawberry glazed donut was my favorite. The strawberry glazed donut stood out with a flavor that reminded me of summer. Unlike other places that use artificial flavoring, the taste was closer to a homemade strawberry puree, which provided a fresh and authentic flavor.

The size of these donuts is slightly smaller than others in the market, but the quality and the price, ranging from 85 cents to a little over $1, more than makes up for it.

The Southern Donut Company isn’t just about donuts, though. They also serve filling breakfast meals. I ordered their biscuits and gravy, which is priced at $12. I added eggs and hashbrowns for $2 and $3, respectively.

The portion sizes are generous, and the food is hearty. The biscuits were as fluffy as clouds, with a succulent lathering of sausage gravy. The scrambled eggs were creamy and perfectly complemented by the sharp cheddar cheese. Finally, the hash browns were cooked perfectly; crispy but not over or undercooked.

The Southern Donut Company also offers a selection of artisan coffees. Caleb, who took my order, recommended the iced churro latte. Priced at $7.60 for a 20-ounce serving, this iced latte is a delightful blend of coffee, sugar, cream, and a generous pinch of cinnamon.

It’s the perfect beverage to accompany your donuts or to have on its own. The taste of the iced churro latte is so compelling that you might find yourself finishing it quicker than you’d expect and ordering another one.

The Southern Donut Company’s service is as impressive as its food. The staff is friendly, helpful, and considerate, making me feel more like a friend than a customer. I was beyond pleased with my visit and enjoyed everything from the gourmet donuts, and hearty meals, to the artisan coffee.

We had breakfast there the other morning. Very good. Hope it makes it. That has been somewhat of a “bud Luck” location the last few years.
