Update – Two cannonballs at Amelia Island Museum of History possibly live

Phyllis Davis, director of the Amelia Island Museum of History, reported today that two cannonballs located inside the South 3rd Street museum, could be live.  Frank Ofeldt, a Fort Clinch State Park employee and  local civil war historian alerted the staff.

According to Davis, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office was called and was on the scene.

UPDATE: “The cannonballs have been safely removed and taken to be detonated off site. We will have the pieces returned to us once they’ve been neutralized!
Fernandina Beach Fire and Police are on the scene after Frank Ofeldt of Fort Clinch identified two of our Civil War Era cannonballs and determined them to be live. JSO bomb squad has arrived to remove and detonate the cannonballs!”
