Ron Kurtz is back with another fascinating journey to discover how “words on the page” become “words on the stage.” This new class, offered by Amelia Lifelong Learning in partnership with Amelia Community Theater, will give participants a greater appreciation of what is involved in staging a play – set design, casting, lighting and sound and, most importantly, directing the actors.

The play providing a framework for this study of stagecraft is “Wit” by Margaret Edson, directed by Ron Kurtz at ACT Studio 209. In this uplifting drama, we see the main character, English Professor Vivian Bearing, reflecting on her life. Among other things, she ponders the relative values of kindness and intellectualism.” The title refers to the use of wit in the poetry of John Donne, especially his Holy Sonnet 10, “Death be Not Proud.” “Wit” won the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The film of the play, directed by Mike Nichols and starring Emma Thompson, won an Emmy in 2001.

The class will meet on Thursdays from 3-5 pm on August 10, 24, 31, and September 7 at ACT, 209 Cedar Street, Fernandina Beach. There will be a final class after September 16 when the play finishes its run. Participants will have the opportunity to purchase 2 discounted tickets for the play. Tickets must be purchased from the ACT Box Office 904-261-6749.
