On February 3, Take Stock in Children of Nassau County, hosted a mentor appreciation brunch at Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ). Mentors in the program meet with their mentee on a weekly basis during the school year, listen and provide guidance and encouragement and are role models coaches and cheerleaders.

The brunch was catered by the students of FSCJ’s culinary department. In addition to the delicious food, the program included speeches by three seniors currently participating in the program. Charles Wate who attends West Nassau High School, Marvin Portillo who attends Yulee High School and Jordan Parker who attends Fernandina Beach High School (spoke via video as he was attending a college recruitment event) shared stories about the significant impact their mentors have had on their lives. Their talks were extremely touching and highlighted the value of the program and the positive difference mentors make through their contributions.

Each of the mentors in attendance was recognized with a certificate of appreciation by the program leaders.

About sixty people participated in the event, which included a good mix of mentors with a range of experience from ten plus years to new mentors who joined the program at the start of this school year.
The event was also a great opportunity for mentors from across Nassau County to share their experiences and learn from one another. Feedback from attendees was extremely positive. They enjoyed the outstanding food and the opportunity to hear directly from the students and connect with other mentors and the program leaders.
A huge success in every way.
