Florida Senator Aaron Bean

Senator Aaron Bean (R-Fernandina Beach) will be hosting a recognition event for firefighters in his area at Nassau County Fire Station 20 on 5518 First Coast Hwy in Fernandina Beach on January 9, 2020 at 10 AM. This event will give recognition to a successfully passed bill that he co-sponsored last session, CS/CS/SB 426 “Firefighters,” which helps firefighters diagnosed with cancer receive disability payments. In addition, Senator Bean and Representative Fetterhoff will be unveiling their new bill for the 2020 legislative session, SB 1092 and HB 487 “Fire Prevention and Control,” relating to decontamination of firefighter equipment.

“Our firefighters are the first ones to rush into a burning building to save lives and it is time to make sure they are not in harm’s way from the residual fire contamination that comes back with them,” said Senator Bean.

“Firefighters selflessly serve our communities and should be given every precaution to prevent having to face cancer,” said Representative Fetterhoff. “This grant program is a vital step in preventing this disease and keeping our firefighter community safe.”

SB 1092 creates the Firefighter Cancer Decontamination Equipment Grant Program within CFO Jimmy Patronis’ Division of State Fire Marshal of the Department of Financial Services to fund this effort to protect the firefighters. It will require the division to administer the program and annually award grants, and distribute equipment and training to qualifying fire departments.
