Roy G. Smith is announcing his candidacy for Fernandina Beach City Commission, Group 4. As a former manager and vice president for major road and bridge contractors Smith spent his entire career working with government agencies. He understands infrastructure costs, maintenance needs and working within a budget.

“Since moving to Fernandina Beach, I have become active in the community and find there are many issues that need attention,” said Smith. “I want to serve as city commissioner to find solutions to storm water and flooding problems, to strengthen our marina and golf enterprise funds and to be a good steward of taxpayer dollars,” he said.

Smith also believes “environmentalists, developers and the city must work together to manage smart growth that is beneficial to both sides. There should be a balance between important environmental concerns and private property rights. And when it comes to beach accesses, they belong to the citizens of Fernandina Beach and must be protected.”

“The commission must become proactive instead of reactive. It must begin looking to the future when making decisions and spending taxpayers’ money,” Smith said.

Roy and his wife Cathy moved to Fernandina Beach because they love the city and its friendly residents. “As a commissioner, I will devote full time and attention to city commission responsibilities outlined by the charter, be careful with taxpayers’ money, and responsive to the citizens I serve.”

Smith is a member of the City of Fernandina Beach Historic District Council. He serves as vice president of the Isle of Palms Homeowners Association.
