PAC logoAs the residents of Fernandina Beach are undoubtedly aware, our city is very proactive in supporting and hosting a wide variety of special events and community activities annually. Among those included are the famous Shrimp Fest, Sounds on Center, various music and book festivals, bicycle races, 5 and 10 K runs and triathlons, and numerous charitable events, parades, and other activities. Many of these involve street closures with consequent traffic and pedestrian control issues.

In support of these many community activities, the Fernandina Police Department created the volunteer Police Auxiliary Corps (PAC) in 2008. PAC members, who receive training and identifying shirts and vests, assist in managing vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and by communicating appropriate event information to participants, spectators and motorists. In addition, PAC members also provide daily assistance in traffic areas around Fernandina schools during the school year and have sometimes been called to assess damage to city property and to assist at crime or accident scenes.

In each of the past two years, PAC volunteers have contributed 2000 hours collectively in support of the approximately 110 community activities held annually. Given the number of events and the amount of time required to serve them, the more volunteers that are committed to support these activities and efforts, the less the burden on individual participants. Thus, the PAC is always open to recruiting new volunteers willing to help out and to serve the community.
