PET (Personal Energy Transportation) NASSAU is a community project associated with a national organization whose mission is to provide mobility to children and adults who have lost the use of their legs because of polio, accidents, and other misfortunes.
Individuals from the community volunteer their time to fabricate critical metal parts used to build sturdy three-wheeled, hand cranked carts which are provided at no cost to these unfortunate individuals.
Currently metal parts made here in the Fernandina shop are used to build more than 600 PET vehicles each year. Donations are tax deductible.
Editor’s Note: Jack Burk, performing in the Nassau Community Band during the Friends of the Library Block Party alerted me to a nice benefit for PET Nassau. Since Helmut Albrecht had sent a wonderful PET Nassau You Tube photo presentation, it seemed fitting to incorporate Helmut’s photography and alert our readers of this worthwhile project and fundraiser. Thanks PET volunteers for all you do!
