Florida Today is reporting seismic testing is under consideration from Deleware south to the Cape Canaveral and as close to 3 miles from the eastern coastline of the United States. According to the article, the “geological surveys and impact could cross into state waters closer to shore as well.” Five companies have applied for permits.
On December 2, 2014, the Fernandina Beach City Commission (FBCC) said no to seismic testing and passed a unanimous resolution after hearing from Erin Handy of Oceana, an organization opposed to seismic air gun testing which is used to explore for oil and gas reserves.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) website, public comments are being accepted for 30 days on the proposed authorizations until July 7. “Comments should be addressed to Jolie Harrison, Chief, Permits and Conservation Division, Office of Protected Resources, National Marine Fisheries Service. Physical comments should be sent to 1315 East-West Highway, Silver Spring, MD 20910 and electronic comments should be sent to [email protected].” For more detailed comment information click here.
I am opposed to seismic testing off Amelia Island shores.
