Everett E. Johns, former Chief Deputy Nassau County Florida (Photo courtesy of Florida Memory Project) Born on September 6, 1870 near Starke, Florida. Married Annie Markley on October 10, 1893. He was elected sheriff of Bradford County in 1892 and served from 1893-1897 and again from 1901-1905. He became the chief deputy sheriff of Nassau County in mid-1905 (four months before his death). On December 6, 1905 he was lured from town for an ambush where he was shot and killed. The name of Everett E. Johns is inscribed on the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C. (East Wall, Panel 10, Line 18).

A picture book depicting the history of the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) is being organized to be published in paperback prior to the opening of the new Sheriff’s Office. Anyone who has old photographs, badges or guns from former deputies, documents or artifacts of historical events, we would like to scan and or photograph them. Credits will be given for all those who provide content.

The book will be available for sale and all artifacts would be greatly appreciated. Those wishing to donate historical items to be placed in the museum may also do so. Please contact Detective Karl Griner at (904) 335-0346 or email: [email protected].
