Nassau County Canvassing Board schedules meetings – Open to the public

PUBLIC MEETINGS OF THE NASSAU COUNTY CANVASSING BOARD FOR THE PUBLIC
PRE-ELECTION TEST OF THE AUTOMATIC TABULATION EQUIPMENT, CANVASSING OF
BALLOTS, AND AUDIT OF VOTING SYSTEM FOR THE NOVEMBER 8, 2016 GENERAL ELECTION

All meetings of the Nassau County Canvassing Board (Canvassing Board) are open to the public and will be conducted at the James S. Page Governmental Complex, Supervisor of Elections’ Canvassing Board Room/Conference Room A, located at 96135 Nassau Place, Yulee, Florida 32097.

Sealed vote-by-mail ballots received prior to 11:00 a.m. on November 3, 2016 will be available for public inspection from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on November 3, 2016 at the office of the Supervisor of Elections, 96135 Nassau Place, Suite 3, Yulee, Florida. Afterwards, those vote-by-mail ballots will be opened at the Canvassing Board meeting to convene at 1:00 p.m. and canvassed and processed; however, the results will not be generated at that time.

Sealed vote-by-mail ballots received prior to 11:00 a.m. on November 7, 2016 will be available for public inspection from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on November 7, 2016 at the office of the Supervisor of Elections, 96135 Nassau Place, Suite 3, Yulee, Florida. Afterwards, those vote-by-mail ballots will be opened at the Canvassing Board meeting to convene at 1:00 p.m. and canvassed and processed; however, the results will not be generated at that time.

Those wishing to inspect vote-by-mail ballots received after 11:00 a.m. on November 7, 2016 through 7:00 p.m. on November 8, 2016 must be present throughout the day on November 8, 2016. Those ballots will be opened at the Canvassing Board meeting to convene at 1:00 p.m. and canvassed and processed; however, the results will not be generated at that time.

Vote-by-mail ballots, early voting ballots, provisional ballots, and precinct results will be tabulated and generated after 7:00 p.m. on November 8, 2016.

The Canvassing Board will reconvene on November 10, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. to canvass any remaining provisional ballots, if necessary, and perform any other duties as prescribed by law.

If a recount is ordered, a meeting will be scheduled and posted on www.VoteNassau.com and various other locations.

The Canvassing Board will reconvene on November 18, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. to canvass any overseas ballots, certify the official results and perform any other duties as prescribed by law for the November 8, 2016 General Election.

The Canvassing Board will reconvene on November 21, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. to conduct the audit of voting system, and perform any other duties as prescribed by law.

If it becomes necessary for the Canvassing Board to reconvene after any noticed Canvassing Board meeting, the time and date will be posted at the office of the Supervisor of Elections, as well as online at www.VoteNassau.com, and announced at the end of the respective meeting.

Section 101.68(2)(c)2, Florida Statutes, provides if any elector or candidate present believes that a vote-by-mail ballot is illegal due to a defect apparent on the voter’s certificate or the vote-by-mail ballot affidavit, he or she may, at any time before the ballot is removed from the envelope, file with the canvassing board a protest against the canvass of that ballot, specifying the precinct, the ballot, and the reason he or she believes the ballot to be illegal. A challenge based upon a defect in the voter’s certificate or vote-by-mail ballot affidavit may not be accepted after the ballot has been removed from the mailing envelope.

In accordance with the Sunshine Law of Florida, all Canvassing Board meetings are open to the public.

Section 286.0105, Florida Statutes, provides that if a person decides to appeal any decision made by the board, agency, or commission with respect to any matter considered at such meeting or hearing, he or she will need a record of the proceedings, and that, for such purpose, he or she may need to ensure that a verbatim record of the proceedings is made, which record includes the testimony and evidence upon which the appeal is to be based.
