It is with a great sigh of relief that we all return to Fernandina Beach following Hurricane Matthew. Although we were fortunately spared major damage, some damage did occur to both public and private facilities. While it is understandable that many want to view the damage, please respect the posted markings, tape, and fences intended to keep people away. In nearly all of those instances, it is for public safety purposes: damage may not be readily visible or other dangers, such as electric or fuel lines, may be present.
Please also be aware of neighbors or others in need. Volunteer efforts will be plentiful and while it may take some time to get larger groups organized, small groups of volunteers can serve some immediate neighborhood needs.
Thank you for your cooperation and patience as the City, it residents, and its businesses recover.
Well planned, well executed, well done. We are grateful to everyone who made a potential nightmare anything but for most. We hope that islanders will continue to show patience in the cleanup to come. There is quite a bit of debris, and this will take some time to collect. Your updates are most helpful. Thank you.
The city’s response to the storm and its aftermath has been amazing. Thank you to all of you who have worked so hard and risked your own well being for the community!!!!!
Just want to give a “Shout Out” to Our City Manager and our Mayor for their timely responses and professionalism during this time. Could not be more proud of you. Remembering, and comparing the Leadership in our Community to Hurricane Agnes in 1972. was in Corning N.Y. The Mayor had taped a message to be played on the Local Radio, every Hour which said, ” Not to worry, the Dikes are strong, and will Hold the River. He evacuated to Ithaca N.Y. and continued to play the Recording. Dikes Broke, we had an extra 8 feet of water through out our City, and the Chemung Valley. Not good leadership back in ’72. Mr. Miller and Mr. Martin, I commend you. Job Well Done.
NC Emergency Management is publicizing debris pick-up guidelines for property owners. Does anyone know if this also applies to City residents since City has an existing contract with Advanced Disposal? Assume this is being handled under FEMA guidelines which has very strict record keeping requirements in order to qualify for reimbursement.
A press release was issued yesterday afternoon detailing the process for debris removal within City limits. The contract with Ceres was activated immediately after the storm and work is being done by the FEMA guidelines.
Thanks Jeremiah. Knew y’all would be on top of it all. Stay safe.
Any idea when Internet will be restored on island?
