Local attorney Clinch Kavanaugh is no longer a candidate for Fernandina Beach City Commission, Group 2. Kavanaugh formally withdrew by letter on August 3, 2017. According to sources, Kavanaugh cited personal reasons for his decision.

The Fernandina Observer has reached out to Kavanaugh for comment, but he has not responded.

Kavanaugh’s withdrawal leaves two candidates in the November contest: Philip A. Chapman III and incumbent Timothy M. Poynter.

The deadline for other candidates to qualify for the November 7 election has passed. Kavanaugh’s withdrawal has eliminated the potential for a run-off election for this seat.

A runoff election may still be required on December 12 in the race for the FBCC Group 3 seat, where three candidates seek to replace the retiring commissioner Robin Lentz: Orlando Avila, Medardo Monzon, and Ronald “Chip” Ross.
