A view of the damage of the National Park Cumberland Island boarding location in St Marys, Georgia

Cumberland Island itself is closed to visitation by all means. The park dock at St. Marys was destroyed and the park’s fuel dock also sustained severe damage. At this time there is no way to safely transport visitors to the island. In addition to Cumberland Island, fourteen national parks from the U.S. Virgin Islands to Fort Sumter were impacted by Hurricane Irma.

Teams of professionals are assessing damages as quickly and comprehensively as they can. All parks and employees want to reopen and serve the public as soon as possible, however we must ensure the sites are safe first. We defer to these professional teams for information regarding the status and safety of the docks, roads, and historic structures.

Saw crews will be working for several weeks to clear roads and trails to enable recreational pursuits to resume when the island opens. Thank you for your patience as we work to find solutions during this challenging time.

Maybe a service from Fernandina could help, until the St. Marys dock is repaired.
