Ed Rodriguez, former director of the Amelia Island Chamber of Commerce died on January 7 at the age 56.  According to Gulf Coast News Today, Rodriguez’s death was attributed to complications from diabetes.

After leaving his position with the Amelia Island Chamber of Commerce in 1988, Rodriguez became president & CEO of the Robins Regional Chamber in Warner Robins, Georgia.  In 2011, he began his most recent position as president and CEO of Coastal Alabama Business Chamber.

Local resident Susan Siegmund who served as executive director of the Amelia Island Chamber in 1987 prior to Rodriguez’s hiring said, “I can’t think of anyone with more of a passion for life than Ed Rodriguez.  He brought a kind of energy and professionalism to that job that left a huge impression to this day.  Ed was instrumental in establishing the Tourist Development Tax for the island and that was no easy task.”

According to Siegmund, prior to leaving the Amelia Island Chamber, “Ed went on to establish his own business consulting firm and worked with many regional Chambers.”

“The memory of his huge smile and big heart will stay with us for a very long time.”

Rodriguez is survived by his mother, Mari Cano of Clearwater, Florida; father, Edward J. Rodriguez Sr. of Tampa, Florida; two brothers, Michael and Joseph of Tampa; and two nieces, Nicole and Tanya of Tampa, Florida. An animal lover, he is also survived by his beloved cocker spaniel, Tillie.
