Former U. S. Congressman Jason Chaffetz

The U.S. Constitution Scholarship Foundation (www.USCSF.net) is bringing former Utah Congressman, Fox News Channel contributor and author of Power Grab, Jason Chaffetz for a community speakers event on Sunday, November 17th at the Omni Hotel Grand Ballroom. The cocktail hour starts at 4:30 pm and the presentation begins at 5pm. The public is invited to this free event, and donations will be appreciated. The Book Loft will have copies of Power Grab available onsite for the book signing to be held after the event. Reservations are required by email to [email protected] by November 10.

Jason Chaffetz was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for Utah’s 3rd congressional district in 2008 and served until 2017 when he decided not to seek another term and resigned. Prior to serving in Congress he was the campaign manager for successful Utah gubernatorial candidate John Huntsman and he later became Huntsman’s Chief of Staff. While in Congress, he came to national prominence in 2014, when he was elected Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. He was only the fifth Member of Congress in 89 years to become a Chairman after just three terms. In this role he led a number of major investigations which included the Benghazi terrorist attack, Fast & Furious, the Office of Personnel Management data breach and the scandal involving the IRS.

What is less known about Congressman Chaffetz is his disciplined approach to spending and budget management which he even applied to own campaign and congressional office. For example, when he first decided to run for Congress in 2008, he announced by mail that he would run a different kind of campaign. He would have no paid staff, no campaign office, no free meals for delegates, no campaign debt and no polling. He told voters, “How you run your campaign is indicative of how you’re going to behave in office.” This worked, and he beat out the incumbent Chris Cannon in the Republican primary and Democrat Bennion Spencer by a margin of 66% to 34 % in the general election. Then, instead of renting an apartment in Washington D.C., he saved approximately $1,500 a month by sleeping on a cot in his office. Some of his other cost-saving positions were his stand against earmarks and the HR 2560, the Cut/Cap and Balance Act which he sponsored. This resonated with the voters in his district as he won over 72% of the vote in his next four re-election campaigns.

Mr. Chaffetz was born in Los Gatos, California. He has a BA in Communications from Brigham Young University where he also was the starting place kicker on their 1988 and 1989 football teams.

No recording of this event will be allowed.
