#2018-00003017 Hazmat Propane Gas Leak – 604 Ash Street

At approximately 12:53 on 12/6/18, units from the Fernandina Beach Fire Department and Fernandina Beach Police Department were dispatched to a report of a gas leak behind the residence located at 604 Ash Street. On scene, command noted a propane leak coming from an underground propane tank. Florida Public Utilities and Nassau County Fire Rescue’s Special Hazards Operations Team were requested to assist with mitigating the gas leak, and nearby residents were notified.

After careful evaluation of the situation, and due to the inoperable valve controls on the tank, the decision was made to burn off what little amount of liquid propane remained inside the tank. Crews on scene used Nassau County Fire Rescue’s ‘propane flare kit’ which allowed for safe disposal of the remaining propane, ultimately rendering the tank and location safe from any further propane leaks.

The entire operation took firefighters from the Fernandina Beach Fire Department, Fernandina Beach Police Department, Nassau County Fire Rescue and crews with Florida Public Utilities approximately 4.5 hours to mitigate and render the scene safe.
No civilian or firefighter injuries have been reported as a result of this incident.
