Editor’s Note: Fernandina Beach has a CRA class 7 rating and property owners receive a 15% discount on flood insurance premiums.
Residents and commercial property owners in the unincorporated areas of Nassau County will continue to enjoy a reduction in flood insurance premiums due to the county’s active participation in the National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS). In addition to lower premiums, the CRS program helps reduce the threat of damage from flood events.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) conducted its annual recertification of Nassau County and on May 1, 2018 verified that the voluntary actions undertaken by Nassau County over the past twelve months have exceeded the minimum standards of the NFIP and meet the criteria for maintaining a CRS Class 8 rating. As a result, flood insurance premium rates will be discounted to reflect the reduced flood risk resulting from community actions. County residents will continue to receive a 10 percent discount in the premium cost of flood insurance for NFIP policies issued or renewed in Special Flood Hazard Areas on or after May 1, 2018. This savings is a tangible result of the flood mitigation activities Nassau County implements to protect lives, reduce property damage, educate residents about flood hazards and protect natural floodplain functions.
