Members of the Princess Amelia Chapter Colonial Dames XVII Century learned how to be properly dressed for the day at their recent quarterly meeting. It wasn’t easy; dressing usually required assistance, and it took a long time to don the various garments, layers, and accessories.

Colonial Dames from the Hannah Dustin Chapter in Jacksonville provided a graphic demonstration of the process. Kenda DeFord, in the middle, is flanked by Lynn Lisenby on the left and Cheryl Field on the right, as they demonstrated how women dressed during the seventeenth century. With Ms. Lisenby acting as maid and Ms. Field as narrator, Ms. DeFord donned layer after layer of material until she emerged in her day frock.

Colonial Dames XVII Century is a national lineage-based organization of women with documented ancestors living in the country before 1701. Its primary mission is the preservation of historic sites and records, promotion of heraldry and coats of arms, support of charitable projects, and the education of the nation’s children.
