City sealLate Friday afternoon a threatening note was found in the men’s public restroom behind the Chamber of Commerce Depot which is located on Centre Street at Front Street. The note contained a non-specific threat that two explosive devices had been placed in the downtown area and would detonate at a specific time that evening. Notifications were made to the local business community regarding the threat and the area was searched for physical evidence. Merchants were advised to report anything suspicious and to remain vigilant. Nothing was discovered during subsequent searches.

On Saturday, January 30th three additional notes were found displayed, again in men’s restrooms at different locations within the city limits. Fernandina Beach Police responded to Winn Dixie, The Dollar Tree and again to the train depot restroom downtown. These three notes once again made non-specific threats about explosive devices having been placed in the downtown area. Police again searched the area and increased precautionary measures.

On Monday, February 1st a similar note was discovered at the depot after officers responded to a small trash can fire inside the restroom.

Police also uncovered video surveillance of two white male suspects entering a location where two of the notes were found and both individuals have been located and interviewed. Another person of interest was observed under suspicious circumstances in the downtown area and has also been identified, located and interviewed.
