Despite great strides in breast cancer research in recent years, it remains the most prevalent form of cancer among women in the United States. Barnabas Health Services continues to offer mammograms, screenings and other related wellness exams to uninsured and low-to-moderate income women throughout Nassau County.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a great time to educate yourself about the disease which strikes one in eight women in the united states in their lifetime. Early detection includes doing monthly breast self-exams, and scheduling regular clinical screenings and mammograms.

“Women of every age should conduct monthly self-exams and depending on your personal risk factors, women should begin annual mammograms between the ages of 40-45,” explained Jessie Hiott, Barnabas’ physician’s assistant.

In addition, Gerri’s Corner is another Barnabas resource for women who are battling cancer by offering a safe, confidential place to receive information, support and patient comfort items at no-cost to the patient. Gerri’s Corner, organized in 2006 by Christine Alznauer in honor of her sister, Gerri, who died from the disease. It is located in Barnabas’ main office, 1303 Jasmine Street, Fernandina Beach, next to the Barnabas Food Pantry.
