The executive committee of The Bartram Garden Club of Amelia Island (pictured) met recently to discuss Florida Arbor Day 2017 and other conservation and civic beautification programs.

“Florida has celebrated Arbor Day since 1886 and every year has one of the first Arbor Day celebrations in the nation, on the third Friday in January. Over 200 communities in Florida celebrate Arbor Day, either as a stand-alone event or in conjunction with some other occasion. Check with your local city officials or school department to see how your community is celebrating Arbor Day. “[source: Florida Forest Service, Urban and Community Forestry page] As an affiliate of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs,The Bartram Garden Club of Amelia Island strives to promote the preservation of our heritage trees and the sustainability of our forests for future generations.

During each club meeting members donate pocket change to support “Penny Pines”, National Garden Clubs’ project to help sustain national and urban forests which are damaged by natural disasters. A donation of $68.00 will support the plantings of 350 pine seedlings. Last year FFGC clubs donated over $100,000 to the Penny Pines project, the leading contributor in NGC’s membership network, which encompasses all 50 states.
