Del Webb to open new active-adult lifestyle community in Northeast Florida

Del Webb, the nation’s leading builder of active adult communities for those 55 and older, has announced a new community, Del Webb Wildlight, coming to Nassau County near Amelia Island within the master-planned community of Wildlight.

Located just north of Jacksonville and south of the Georgia line, Del Webb Wildlight will include up to 660 single-family and villa homes. Del Webb will build on 33- to 65-foot-wide homesites and offer 16 consumer inspired floor plans ranging in size from 1,343 to 3,339 square feet. Development is currently underway with models projected to open in early 2022 and new homes starting in the $200s.

I see the Wildlight community advertising its proximity to Amelia Island’s “world-class beaches.” Will Wildlight be contributing to the renourishment and upkeep of those “world-class beaches” that they promote to new residents? Where will these new beach-lovers park? Who will pay to pick up their trash, the life guards who protect them, the paths and walkways they use to access the “world-class beaches.” It might be time to reconsider paid parking with stickers for Amelia Island taxpayers who pay for the “world-class beaches” through a special taxing unit. Why should Amelia Island pay the price for the rampant, uncontrolled development taking over Nassau County?

Paid parking? How about paid entry, with a toll booth at the foot of Shave bridge?!?

There’s a toll at the entrance to Jekyl Island and another at the St. Simons Island causeway just 50 miles north of here. “Locals” don’t get to ride free, but they do have the option to purchase an annual pass. Be careful what you ask for.

Being one of the “fastest growing communities” has its drawbacks. History teaches us that neither residential nor business development pays for itself in the long run. Local taxpayers pick up the tab for roads, hospitals, schools, police and fire protection, and as another commenter points out, maintaining our beautiful beaches. As population grows, the very things that draw people to our area are gradually reduced and replaced by traffic, wider roads, and general ugliness. It is time to stop buying into the myth of development as a panacea for financial stability and embrace smart growth and sustainable policies.
