DIGITAL CAMERASubmitted by Adrienne Burke

Community Development Director, City of Fernandina Beach

As part of an effort to create an overall master plan for management and preservation of historic Bosque Bello cemetery, the City is asking for citizen input. Topics include additional types of interment and future needs at the cemetery. To access the survey, please visit:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BosqueBello     The survey should not take more than ten minutes to complete.

DIGITAL CAMERAA Bosque Bello master plan is directed in two elements of the City’s Comprehensive Plan. Both the Recreation and Open Space and Historic Preservation Elements of the Comprehensive Plan state that a master plan shall be created for the cemetery. This plan will help ensure that proper stewardship is provided for the care and maintenance of Bosque Bello in years to come. The Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for management of Bosque Bello. The Planning Department is assisting with creation of the plan.

Established c.1798 , Bosque Bello Cemetery is a highly significant cultural resource in Fernandina Beach. Resting place to thousands, Bosque Bello, or “Beautiful Woods,” is a tangible reminder of our history and a peaceful and contemplative part of our City. The City of Fernandina Beach has owned and operated the cemetery since as early as 1857.

For more information, or to receive a hard copy of the survey, please call the City of Fernandina Beach Community Development Department at 904-310-3135 or email Adrienne Burke at [email protected].

I appreciate the opportunity to give input to the Cemetery Plan; however, I think most of us are wanting to know how the City will be able to financially meet the present and future needs of the Cemetery. Presently, the responsibility is within the Parks and Recreation Dept. with two employees (one for management and one for maintenance (mowing, etc.). Obviously, this arrangement has been inadequate. How will the Plan change this?
