Fernandina Beach, Fla. — July 23, 2018 — Rayonier Advanced Materials Inc. (NYSE: RYAM) announced today that it closed on the American Legion’s surplus property located on Gum Street, which will preserve the property’s longstanding industrial zoning. Originally, in order to sell the property, the American Legion Post 54 had requested that the City Commission rezone it from Industrial (IND) / Medium Density Residential (MDR) to Mixed Use (MU). Rayonier Advanced Materials’ purchase allows the Gum Street Land to remain part of the city’s economically-essential manufacturing muscle. “This property is located across the street from our Fernandina Plant, which makes it a logical purchase for us,” said C.A. McDonald, general manager of Rayonier Advanced Materials’ Fernandina Beach plant. “The benefits go both ways—the American Legion has a local buyer that doesn’t need new zoning and our plant gains a nearby property for future use. This is good for Rayonier Advanced Materials, good for the American Legion and good for our local economy and quality of life.”

At this time, Rayonier Advanced Materials has no plans to develop the property. However, McDonald noted that manufacturing makes up over 20 percent of Fernandina’s economy and much of that is situated along Gum Street. “We believe securing this land, which is already industrially-zoned, is a prudent move in both the short and long terms,” said McDonald.

“We’re very excited and gratified to have found a local buyer in Rayonier Advanced Materials,” said William Martin, commander of the American Legion Post 54. “The deal will benefit the American Legion, the services we provide and the 800 local members who are veterans and affiliates. It also strengthens our community’s local manufacturing base, upon which hundreds of jobs rely.”

Looks like a win-win for both parties and the city of Fernandina and the veterans in Nassau County.
