Black Cat Pizza: Don’t Let the Outside Fool You

By Dylan Bailey

Most likely, Black Cat Pizza is a name you’ve heard many times or driven past on A1A, but there’s a reason the pizza place is still slingin’ out pies like there’s no tomorrow. And hey, when does pizza ever not sound good? So, my Thursday was free. I’d barely eaten, drank some coffee, and was ready to carbo-load. Pizza was calling my name.

According to Black Cat Pizza’s website, their pizzas are “Southern” style. They go on to say, “Like a lot of things that came from New York, they only got better when they made it down south.”

Black Cat Pizza’s aesthetic is a vibe. You’d never tell by the outside of the building that inside was a colorful and eclectic pizza joint. It gives off a strong Mellow Mushroom experience, which I enjoyed. While the walls were colorful and full of charm, the food is what I was interested in.

Besides pizza, Black Cat Pizza offers up breadsticks, calzones and salads. I was surprised at how small the menu was but that didn’t stop multiple items from popping out at me. All of the specialty pizzas sounded wonderful, and if you have something specific in mind, the build-your-own option is perfect.

Something I enjoyed was the ability to order by the slice. And, according to their website, weekly specials pop up where you can get a slice or two for a great deal.

I started my meal with one of two pizzas: Buffalo. Made with their O.G. base and pulled chicken, bacon, gorgonzola, onions, swirls of Franks Red Hot, and ranch. I’ve never been a huge fan of pizzas with a lot going on – loads of flavors competing and overpowering each other – but this was amazing. The wallop of flavor from the bombs of Gorgonzola, paired flawlessly with the Red Hot. And the juicy chicken and salty bacon tied it all together. I loved it.

To finish, I dug into the second pizza. A more traditional, white pizza. Made with their O.G. base and mozzarella, feta, black pepper, oregano, parmesan – a cheese lover’s dream. I can’t say much besides how much I enjoyed this. The black pepper was a nice touch that added a punch, while the parmesan added a salty bite.

Before you even step foot in the door, Black Cat Pizza tells you what it does best: pizza. And its pizza is tasty. If you like a thicker, breadier dough, this is the place for you. While the menu is slim, what is offered is top-notch. Their website frequently updates with specials and deals all week long. I could easily see myself stopping by for a slice or two during lunch.

Well if they came from New York it sure didn’t get better here. They must have left the NY style up there, Their pies are not even close to New York pies. Try calling them to order a pie to go or just to get your order in early before you arrive to dine-in. If they ever answer the phone you couldn’t prove it by me. If you like Pappa John’s or Domino’s style then Black Cat is for you. But if you’re looking for NY style and taste, keep looking.

I don’t think they were trying to say “they” came from NY…….I think they were just saying, like a lot of ideas that started up north, southerners improve upon them when the “idea” finds it way south.

I think the principal folks involved here started at Moon River on the island. I’ve noticed people fall into two camps with Moon River…..love it or hate it….I never hear a “it’s alright” comment. We personally love Moon River. I’m sure we would be very happy with Black Cat also if we ever drove out there for one.

By the way, if Manhattan counts, I’ve eaten pizza there quite a bit in the past at 3 different places (mostly on 8th)…….it’s alright.

Taste is subjective; this pizza is an example of that. This is an average pizza. Tried it once and will drive by it to go elsewhere.

Not the best I have ever eaten, but not bad either.

Love their cheap lunch deal, 2 slices and a drink for $9 – Good for a quick cheap lunch
