Yulee’s own Derrick Henry, Heisman Trophy winner and all-time high school rushing leader, will return to the First Coast on May 17 for the Florida Times-Union’s Best of Preps awards dinner. Henry, who is one of the most successful Northeast Florida athletes ever, will be the dinner’s featured speaker.
This awards banquet is The Florida Times-Union’s way of saying thank you to the thousands of outstanding high school athletes, coaches, and fans who allow us to share their stories, performances and passions. The event honors the top performers from the following Florida counties: Baker, Clay, Columbia, Duval, Nassau, Putnam, St. Johns, Suwannee, and Union County; and the following Georgia counties: Camden, Charlton, Glynn, and Ware County in 19 different sports. Awards will be presented to the Outstanding Player of the Year in each sport, as well as Male Athlete of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year, and Coach of the Year. All-First Coast Preps athletes are invited to attend for free and the event is open to family, friends and the general public.

Following his outstanding record in sports at Yulee High School in Nassau County, Derrick Henry was considered a consensus five-star recruit and listed as the Number One athlete. He committed to the University of Alabama in September 2012. During his 2015 season with the Crimson Tide, Henry broke Herschel Walker’s single-season college rushing yards record in the SEC. He went on to earn many more honors, including the Heisman Trophy, before being drafted by the Tennessee Titans, where he continues to excel as running back.
