St. Marys Riverkeeper Annual Lowcountry Boil

Posted

The St. Marys Riverkeeper is proud to announce a sneak peek of a short documentary about federally endangered Atlantic sturgeon in the St. Marys River. The premiere will take place at the annual “Toast to Clean Water” on October 19, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. at Sugar Pointe Estate in Yulee, Florida.

The short documentary will raise awareness about why sturgeon research is important. Through visuals in all four watershed counties (Baker and Nassau in Florida; Charlton and Camden in Georgia) and interviews, it showcases the intricate relationship between sturgeon, locals in the river ecosystem and dedicated conservationists working tirelessly to learn more about this historically significant species.

“We are thrilled to share this important story with our community,” said Emily Floore, Executive Director of St. Marys Riverkeeper. “This sneak peek documentary not only raises awareness about what we know about this iconic species but also raises many questions about the mystery of the sturgeon on the St. Marys.”

The event will also include live music, a silent auction, and Lowcountry Boil. Tickets will also serve as door prize entries: a trip for four to Ellicott's Mound with Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge staff, a “bucket list” type experience, inaccessible to the public due to surrounding private lands. Funds raised support education and outreach programs, water quality monitoring, and advocacy efforts. Tickets available at:

The St. Marys River originates in the Okefenokee Swamp and flows approximately 130 miles to the Atlantic Ocean, forming the boundary between Georgia and Florida. The nearly 2,300-square-mile watershed covers four counties, including Charlton and Camden counties in Georgia as well as Nassau, Baker and a small portion of Duval counties in Florida. St. Marys Riverkeeper’s work impacts more than 200,000 people, ensuring the watershed remains a leading example of ecological integrity, shared stewardship, and enduring appreciation, protecting the St. Marys River now and for the future.
