Beach access 28 South is now opened.

After closing a number of beach access points for repair,  the City of Fernandina announced work is finished on access points 28 and 30 and they are opened. According to Mary Hamburg, public information officer, the boardwalks for 4N, 6N, 35S, and 40 have been removed pending re-installation, but are now available for access as “walk-thrus.”

A walk-thru on North Fletcher. Repairs included replacing defective bolts as shown on access 28 S.

I can only speak as to beachwalk over number 28 which was opened as of last Friday. From my looking at what was replaced these were handrails except in three instances deck boards were put down. The fact that an engineer claimed that this was a threat to Public Safety is a joke. Since when are handrails structural? Be that as it may our city manager in a previous weekly report said that all Beach walkovers will be open as of May 24th. We shall see

The pictures in the article show that there were defective (corroded I suppose) bolts in at least one of the walkway support beams. I would classify that as a structural danger.

These 2 beach walks are a much needed improvement. Please let us know when the 10 additional beach walks are finally completed. I would like to commend Susan Hardee Steger for the brief excellent article and 2 pictures.
