Restoration of the Centre Street train depot is progressing and now new colors grace the historic structure. According to John Cotner local architect involved in the project, old paint chip samples were sent to a testing agency for analysis. The colors closely match the original colors of the building. It is expected the exterior will be completed by the end of July.
Gil Langley, president of the Amelia Island Tourist and Development Council, said the visitor center remains open during renovation. When safety issues arise during construction, it will close for brief periods. A completion date is difficult to determine until the interior of the building is stripped down. Interior brick re-pointing is possible.
The restoration project is funded by the Tourism and Development Council, the City of Fernandina Beach, and the Amelia Island-Fernandina Restoration Foundation.
Thanks for the update. Looking good!
What ever happened to the old locomotive parked on the tracks?
