Recently, a local resident and dog owner, Gay Culverhouse, reached out to the Parks and Recreation Department to inquire about the possibility of placing a couple of dog waste stations in Central Park. She graciously offered to seek sponsorship for the purchase of these stations.

Gay found two local businesses that were more than happy to donate funds towards the project. One sponsor is Octavio Martinez of Hot Paws Spa and Resort, which is located on 8th Street in Fernandina Beach. The other is Dr. Jennifer Towles of Amelia Island Animal Hospital, a full-service veterinary medical facility which is also located on 8th Street. The City of Fernandina Beach Parks and Recreation Department appreciates this generosity and encourages the pet owners of this community to clean up after their pets.

Great idea. Now if we could just do the same at every beach access, along with generous rewards for turning in thoughtless pet owners who leave their dog waste on our beautiful beaches. Huge fine is warranted. Grrrrrrr!
