DSCN7005This morning under sunny skies and with a breeze just strong enough to ruffle the many flags both mounted and carried by local citizens, the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1088 led citizens, visitors, elected officials and our veterans in honoring those men and women who since the beginning of our nation have given their lives in service of the United States of America.

Crowds began forming early, and many people took advantage of the shade provided by the newly constructed train platform at the historic depot at the foot of Centre Street.

The formal program, which lasted about an hour, included many local military and civilian organizations.  Music was provided by the Song Spinners, under the direction of Jane Lindberg.  Mrs. Courtney Russell sang the National Anthem as audience members joined in.

Frank Ofeldt, Chief Ranger and Curator at Fort Clinch, delivered a brief history of Memorial Day, also known as Decoration Day.

Special Guest Speaker Pastor Gary Hutcheson delivered the keynote address, which focused on the contributions of those who served during the Vietnam War era.  Hutcheson, who is well known throughout the area, today serves as pastoral care manager of ministry efforts of 19 chaplains for Community Hospice in northeast Florida.  Previously he worked with the U.S. State Department, providing memorial services for State Department employees killed in overseas terrorist attacks.  His dedication to meeting the needs of military personnel and their families has earned him recognition by the state of Florida.

Hutcheson’s moving remarks motivated the audience to stand in support of the nation’s Vietnam veterans who did not receive the parades or tributes following their return from combat in the 1960’s and 1970’s.

The Amelia Island Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution read the names of Nassau County and Fernandina Beach service members who died in service to the nation.

The West Nassau High School Air Force ROTC executed the folding of the flag, followed by  volley fire, placing of a wreath by a Fort Clinch Honor Detail.  Rob and Steven Flueger played echo taps.  Pastor James Fogle-Miller, Colonel AUS retired, provided both the invocation and benediction.
