Fernandina Beach municipal golf course fire

City of Fernandina Beach Fire Department Press Release

Fernandina Beach Fire Department personnel responded to a commercial structure fire on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at approximately 1:31 p.m.  An emergency call was placed to 911 dispatchers and alerted them to the fire at the Fernandina Beach Municipal Golf Course at 2800 Bill Melton Road.  Firefighters from the Fernandina Beach Fire Department and Nassau County Fire Rescue responded to the early afternoon blaze.

Four engine companies, one ladder, four ambulances and Chiefs were dispatched to the blaze.  Upon arrival, initial reports indicated heavy fire and black smoke coming from the structure.  The structure was a maintenance building that  was used to store golf course landscape equipment and chemical fertilizers for maintenance of the course.  The building and contents were valued at $500,000 and were a total loss.  Florida DEP was called in to evaluate environmental effects from the firefighting efforts.

No workers or patrons were injured in the fire, and no firefighters were injured while battling the blaze.  Fire Officials asked residents in neighboring homes to remain indoors due to the heavy black smoke until the fire was brought under control.

The fire was brought under control at 3:50 p.m., and completely out at 4:56 p.m.  The cause of the blaze does not appear to be suspicious, but the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the City Fire Marshal at this time.
