Black History Month will feature a new book by American Beach author Annette Myers. This time, her book is not about American Beach, but about historic Peck High School in Fernandina. Ms. Myers’ new book is titled Peck High School – Golden Years Remembered. Peck High School was the first and only black high school, in the area, which goes back one hundred and thirty-two years ago, beginning in 1885. The first graduating class was in 1891.

In later years, the school was named for Professor William H. Peck who served as principal for almost fifty years.

Peck High School, renamed the Peck Center, was restored by the City of Fernandina Beach, who in years past acquired ownership from the Nassau County School Board, and is now a significant community facility. In 2010, the former black high school was included in the city’s historic district. Peck’s legacy makes it a historical monument and landmark of African-American history. It is also a part of the story of African-American history in Fernandina Beach and Nassau County.

A book release, signings and reception will be held at the Peck Center on Saturday, February 25th from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. by the Nassau County Community Development Corporation (NCCDC). A short program will start the event at 2:00.p.m.

A portion of the book sales will go to benefit the NCCDC scholarship fund. Each year, since 1992, a high graduating senior is awarded the William H. Peck Memorial Scholarship. Contributions are always welcomed.

The Peck community and everyone is invited to come. The book is for anyone who is interested in Peck High School and anyone who is interested in African-American history on Amelia Island and Nassau County.
Only 300 books will be available. Henceforth, books will have to be ordered through your local bookstore or online through Amazon.
Golden Years Remembered is published through Giro di Mondo Publishing.
