Barnabas Center volunteers, Melinda Tosoni and Jan Meier, tend to the community garden that helps to provide fresh vegetables to Nassau County neighbors in need through the Barnabas Food Pantry.

Tucked away in Fernandina Beach, the Barnabas Center Community Garden is an ongoing project that supports the Barnabas Food Program’s objective of providing more fresh and healthier food distribution to Nassau County neighbors in need. The first vegetable plantings were established in November 2017. New plantings are installed seasonally by nine dedicated volunteers who manage the planting, watering, weeding, and maintenance of the garden.

The fall harvest of kale and collards was distributed to qualified individuals and families through the Barnabas Food Pantry. Currently growing and awaiting the winter harvest are kale, collards, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. Soon thereafter, volunteers will be planting turnips, kale, collards, onions, lettuce, and mustards for an early spring harvest.

To donate funds to the Barnabas Food Program that will support the purchase of supplies, plants, and seeds, please send donations with instructions to apply it to the garden project to: Barnabas Center, 1303 Jasmine Street, Suite 101, Fernandina Beach, FL 32034.

If you, or someone you know, is in need of food, please contact Barnabas at (904) 261-7000 to request information on eligibility guidelines. The Barnabas Food Pantry, located at 1301 Jasmine Street, is open Mondays 1-4 pm, Tuesdays-Thursdays 10 am-3 pm, and Fridays 10 am-12 pm.
