“The Bookstore Training Group of Paz & Associates worked with Bergmeyer Associates, Inc., the Boston-based architectural firm . . .”
The Association for Retail Environments awarded Jeff Kinney’s bookstore, An Unlikely Story, three awards during Wednesday night’s awards ceremony in Las Vegas.
The store won the Silver Award for Specialty Store Design and the single awards for Sustainability and Flooring.
The Bookstore Training Group of Paz & Associates worked with Bergmeyer Associates, Inc., the Boston-based architectural firm that developed the entire three-story LEED certified building, on designing the 2,300 square foot retail space. Franklin Fixtures provided all of the fixtures, including the cabinetry for the cafe.
“We are thrilled that an indie bookstore is among the national retailers, chain restaurants, and popular grocery stores recognized with this year’s awards,” stated Donna Paz Kaufman of Paz & Associates. “The line-up of award recipients proves that creativity goes a long way to delivering a unique and memorable experience that you just can’t get when shopping online.”
Elizabeth Dion, local architect and Blue Door artist, serves on the Paz & Associates team for store design and lighting.
Photos of the winning projects will be published in Retail Environments: 2016 Winners Book.

Where in Fernandina Beach is this bookstore located?
The bookstore is in Plainville, MA, which is south of Boston. Donna Paz Kaufman and her husband, Mark live in Fernandina Beach.
Just another reason, Why we are so Delighted, that Donna and Mark live in our Neighborhood. Congratulations on the Award.
Yes, An Unlikely Story is in Plainville, Massachusetts, yet much of the design happened on Amelia Island! This little island inspires all kinds of creativity and we are so happy to have moved our business and our lives here 14 years ago.
Wow, this is good news all the way around. From our local talented consultants to the end product and look of the store. Great name for a book shop, too! Thanks for sharing news of the award.
We are so fortunate to have Donna and Mark Kaufman on our little Island. They are the same people who bring us the wonderful “An Evening of Story and Song” several times a year.
This past fall my husband and I were visiting children/grandchildren in Boston and made the short trip to Plainville to visit An Unlikely Story, Jeff Kinney’s very cozy, comfortable and uniquely designed bookstore. It was packed with people eager to buy books and experience the warmth. Even away from Amelia Island we were able to experience the talents of our friends Donna and Mark Kaufman. Bravo on your well deserved award.
