At the Board of County Commissioners regular meeting on Monday, February 24, 2014, the County Commission asked County Staff to develop a timeline for the construction of a new Sheriff’s Administration Building at the Judicial Complex in Yulee, which has been started and stopped several times since 2000. The current Commission set aside funding for the Capital Improvement Project in 2013, but no construction date had been set and no exact cost of the project has been determined.

On Monday, March 3, 2014, Sheriff Bill Leeper attended a meeting with County Manager Ted Selby, County Attorney David Hallman, County Contract Manager Charlotte Young, and County Commissioner Pat Edwards to develop a timeline on building a new Sheriff’s Office. The timeline put forth by the County Attorney & County Staff will allow construction of a new facility to begin in December 2014, pending approval by the County Commission.

“The almost 300 employees, reserves, and volunteers at the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office are excited to finally be closer to having a modern-day functional law enforcement facility where everyone can be under the same roof for enhanced communication and coordination, as well as being able to better serve the public” said Sheriff Bill Leeper.

I hope this new Sheriff’s building will be constructed soon. It’s been needed for a long time. The current building is full of mold. The plumbing don’t work half the time. Ceilings are falling apart and in disrepair. The offices are scattered among 10 or so trailers. Security is an issue. Probably other issues as well.

We have a fairly new courthouse, jailhouse, emergency operations center, tax/tag/title/DMV building, and the commissioners chambers are up-to-date.

Bill Leeper has done an excellent job so far as Sheriff and he can get things done. He deserves to have a new facility in order to make this county a safe place to live and work. This new building will get built!
