Brodie Smith, Ultimate Frisbee enthusiast travels all over the world to compete and spend time with up and coming Ultimate Frisbee players.  On Friday, July 19, Smith shared his skills with approximately 20 high school players during a one day training session.

Ultimate Frisbee was invented in Maplewood, New Jersey and is a combination of football, soccer, and basketball. Sportsmanship is an important aspect of the game.  Unlike other competitive sports, Ultimate Frisbee  players “self officiate.”  Players assume the positions of handlers, strikers, poppers, and cutters, and move up and down the field in this fast moving game that requires plenty of teamwork.

Smith’s visit to Fernandina Beach was arranged by local resident Tom Rowan, who champions the sport of Ultimate Frisbee in our community.  Rowan coaches the  “Dina – Saurs,” a team comprised of students in grades 9 – 12.  High school students are  invited to play no matter what skill level, even those out of shape. “If you aren’t in shape, don’t worry we’ll get you there,” says Rowan.

As Rowan began coaching,  he recognized his young team looked up to one player in the pro league (AUDL) and that was Brodie Smith.  So Rowan made a deal with the players.  “Commit to being on the team,” says Roan and “I will do what it takes to get  Brodie.”  After a persistent six month pursuit, mainly  through Facebook, Smith agreed to come to Fernandina.

Smith honed his skills at the University of Florida where he played at the college level.  His current home is Chicago, Illinois.  Click on the video below to see Smith’s amazing talents.
