Deployed troops show their appreciation as Trees for America’s Troops announces the best year in its nine-year history. Founded in 2010 after the death of U.S. Army SPC4 Kelly J. Mixon in Afghanistan, the 501(c)3 non-profit has grown steadily.

This year, 179 volunteers spent three days in Maxwell Hall at Memorial United Methodist Church preparing 399 two-foot high, pre-lit Christmas trees for shipment to Afghanistan, Iraq, Turkey, Poland, and several undisclosed locations. Those same volunteers also signed and wrote short notes on 1,862 Christmas cards, filled 1,197 large Christmas stockings, and sent over 300 toys and treats to K-9 Warriors.

Over 3,300 pounds of this Christmas cheer filled a 20-foot U-Haul truck, which was then driven to the Fernandina Beach Post Office for shipment to the A.P.O. in New York. The U.S. Postal Service charged the organization $5,961 for shipping the trees and treats from here to the A.P.O., which averages out to $44.82 for each box.
