Ron Kurtz returns to Amelia Lifelong Learning with a new class on how stagecraft helps “words on the page” become “words on the stage.” The play this time is “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time” adapted from the novel by Mark Haddon.
It tells the story of 15-year-old Christopher Boone, who has Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of autism. He doesn’t like to be touched or meet new people; he cannot make small talk; he hates the colors brown and yellow. A math whiz, he loves solving puzzles. One night he observes that the neighbor’s dog has been killed. Christopher has never left his street on his own before, but now he’ll have to in order to find out who killed the dog.
This new class, offered in partnership with Amelia Community Theatre, offers some interesting new dimensions, including reading the original novel and hearing guest presenters Tener Wade, the play’s director; Marilyn Wesley, Professor Emerita of English talking about literary aspects of the book and play; and Theresa Sparks, a psychologist with extensive knowledge of autism.
Seeing the ACT production is part of the course. Participants may purchase discounted tickets at the ACT box office. The final class will include a discussion of the play and its production, including the stagecraft that makes a play different from a novel.
The class meets Thursdays, May 30-June 27, 3-5 pm at Amelia Community Theatre, 209 Cedar Street. Fernandina Beach. The course fee is $40.
