The eligible voters in Fernandina Beach have spoken.
I would like to remind everyone that there is a very large number of very high tax paying, property owning, members of our community that are currently not able to vote in local elections. Although these people are currently not able to vote in local elections, they often pay more in taxes than any of us. These people are tax paying members of the community as well. Their voice does matter, even though their vote is not counted today. I urge the Commision to listen to these tax payers as well as they move Fernandina Forward.

Hmmm,…
LOCAL election voting requirements?? Should it be open to all taxpayers??
Interesting topic… Particularly if there is question as to what the tax paying community wants for the future of our community.

Mark, I think that would be annexation?

Sorry Tony…. Annexation would be another discussion altogether. I was simply referring to second homeowners who own property and pay more in property taxes to support the local community and all the services (including schools etc)…
YET… they don’t even get the privilege to vote in local elections.
If they pay local taxes… they should vote in local elections.

Mark, have you brought this up at a Commission meeting at all? If you did what was the response? Honestly interested, I know little about this topic

Peggie and I lived in the finger lakes region of New York State for some twenty years. We had a few friends that were fortunate enough to own a couple homes. Taxes on these properties ran into the Thousands, so what happened around the lakes concerned them. The split in time spent between the homes was 50/50 so one adult would register to vote at each residence. they had to register a car, keep a Post office Box. At least it’s a vote.

Can someone help me understand why the entire island is not in the city of Fernandina Beach. especially if the property owners already pay taxes as stated above.

It might be those who live in the un-incorporated section of the Island. Interesting – if they pay CITY taxes, then why are they not counted as eligible voters?
On Tim’s election – yes, the people has spoken and hopefully we will as a City progress ahead with our business in a positive manner.
