Postal Regulatory Commission sends back request to close historic post office

The Postal Regulatory Commission has sent back a request from the United State Postal Service to close the historic Fernandina Post Office. That action avoids the closing of the facility and a potential sale of the building;  at least for the short term.  The “Order Remanding Determination” was issued on November 19.

“The record does not contain sufficient information concerning either the effect on the community or that customers will continue to receive effective and regular service,”  according to the order. At the conclusion of the order, the regulatory commission said, “The Postal Service has not adequately considered the requirements of 39 U.S.C. 404 (d).  Accordingly, the Postal Service’s determination to close the Downtown Fernandina Beach Station post office is remanded to the Postal Service for further action.”
