Nassau Humane Society (NHS), a no-killanimal shelter, recently celebrated the groundbreaking for its new animal shelter. Nearly 200 people gathered at the Nassau Humane Society Dog Park on
November 21st for the groundbreaking. The new shelter, which will open next summer, will increase capacity for dogs and cats, replacing the dilapidated shelter that the organization currently operates out of.

During the ceremony, Dave and Pat Smith of The Chardonnay Foundation presented a
$200,000 donation to NHS. The check was given after NHS successfully completed
the $200,000 Chardonnay Challenge Grant, raising $200,000 in 12 weeks that the
Foundation matched.

Dave and Pat Smith shared their sentiments -“On behalf of the Chardonnay
Foundation we would like to thank this community for its participation and the
commitments made during the challenge grant campaign. We could not be more
pleased to donate the full amount of the challenge because of the generosity you
all have shown. It is truly a worthy cause to support. “

“While this is a momentous occasion, our work is not yet complete,” said NHS
Executive Director Brandy Carvalho. “We still have $500,000 to raise to complete
our Capital Campaign. Now we need our community to be as generous as they can,
so we can satisfy the mortgage on the building.”
