At last night’s meeting of the Board of County Commissioners, Commissioner Leeper moved to reevaluate mobility fee agreements currently in operation around the county as part of a broader ask from the planning department to move forward on the development of a Recreation Master Plan.

There are currently three districts within Nassau County that operate under mobility fee agreements with the County: 1) Western Nassau, which contains property west of I-95, 2) Eastern Nassau, which contains property east of I-95, and 3) the East Nassau County Planning Area. These agreements require mobility fees to be assessed every five years to ensure they will meet future needs for public roads in the county.

In August 2018, Nassau County engaged Barth and Associates to evaluate the recreational needs of Nassau County. Inseparably tied to those needs are mobility fees, which fund the public roads necessary to incorporate these recreational lands into existing and future development.

A need has been shown to move forward with a review of the current mobility fee agreements, pursuant to the five-year look-ins built into the agreements, and update them as needed to ensure adequate fees are being assessed to maintain public roads for current and future Nassau County residents. Tonight’s motion allows for that research and discussion to begin.
